Third-round playing partners Carl Yuan and James Piot held the lead at the 2015 Western Junior heading into the final round Thursday at Riverside Golf Club in North Riverside, Illinois.
Piot, a native of Canton, Michigan, and Yuan, of Lake Mary, Florida, both birdied No. 9 to finish 1-under 69 on the day and even par through 54 holes.
Yuan, the nation’s No. 19th ranked junior and a future Washington Huskie, said heavy rains that soaked the course early Thursday helped keep third round scores in check.
“The course is not playing easy because of all the rain,” he said. “The ball has no roll. The course doesn’t play long but it does not play short. The greens are also pretty tough.”
Piot said his strategy for holding off Yuan and the seven other challengers within two strokes of the lead is simple.
“I just gotta make some birdies and limit the bogies,” he said.
The final round began play at 1:45 p.m.
